Since their Oscar winning debut ‘Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have had largely seperate careers. The pair are still good friends though, you suspect they’ve always been looking for another project to collaborate on, and it seems they’ve found one. Damon has told GQ magazine that the pair are “.. doing a Whitey Bulger movie”.
If you’re unfamiliar with Bulger, he is one of the most infamous gangsters in American history. The former godfather of the the Irish Mob also controlled the South Boston underworld for several years, as well working as an FBI informant for many years in return for the protection of his operations. After fleeing Boston he was at large for 16 years before he was arrested in Santa Monica o
n June 22nd 2011, and charged with 19 counts of murder. All sound a little familiar? well that’s probably because Jack Nicholsons character in The Departed was largely based on Bulger.
It’s certainly an exciting prospect, especially when you consider that former Sopranos Executive Producer and Boardwalk Empire creator Terrence Winter is on board with the project, in a writing capacity. There’s a bit of competition around though, with several other projects about Bulger in the pipeline. One of those working on a script, is Graham King, producer of The Departed, who has allegedly secured the rights to the Winter Hill Gangs chief enforcer, John Martorano. But Damon seems confident, stating “There are a couple of competing movies and i don’t think its been announced yet that we’re doing it”. “But the sooner its announced the better, just because everyone else will back off hopefully. I’m really excited about it”
As yet there is no word on any possible release date, or filming date, but with such strong competition around Damon and Affleck will be pushing to get a deal through as quickly as possible. We don’t expect we’ll have to wait long for an announcement.
In other news, Martin Scorsese is back with a new film to be released on the 2nd December. Titled ‘Hugo’ it’s a 3D family adventure film…..which is a bit of a shock. I guess he’s earnt the right to do whatever the hell he wants though. It is based on the book ‘The invention of Hugo Cabret’ by Brian Selznick, which follows the adventures of a 12 year old orphan, who lives in the walls of a Paris train station. As you’d expect there are some big names involved including Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Ben Kingsley, Ray Winstone and Sacha Baron Cohen. See the trailer below. Looks a little bit shit to me but i’m not 12 years old and it has played to some acclaim at the New York Film Festival.
